Performance Skills for Writers
Open-mics, slams, and other live performance venues are some of the best places to get your work heard, whether you're an experienced writer or just starting out. But it takes a lot more than great writing to connect with a live audience. In this hands-on workshop co-taught with Toni Amato, you'll learn to overcome stage fright, make friends with the microphone, chat up the crowd, and put your body and voice to work in the service of your words. Plus, you'll get practical tips on finding venues that are right for your work, and getting yourself booked as a featured reader. In a fun, supportive atmosphere, we'll learn together by doing, trying something else, and doing it again -- culminating in a field trip to a local live venue to wow the crowd with your new skills!
Poetry Workshops
Take your work to the next level in a safe, supportive atmosphere. Inspiring assignments will get your pen moving, and facilitated critique will forge new tools for your craft toolbox. Throughout, the focus remains on strengthening your personal voice and helping you achieve your writing goals and aspirations.
Page vs. Stage
Is slam poetry "real" poetry? Is page poetry relevant to anyone besides other poets? We'll take a hard look at these and other questions filling the chasm between the Page and the Stage. We'll think about audience, accessibility and intent, explore techniques that will help you succeed in both venues, and enjoy the work of poets who are bridging the gap and breaking down genre walls.
